Caprifoliaceae

Sambucus and Viburnum are included in this family in A Utah Flora, but have been removed to Adoxaceae; flowers in Adoxaceae are more often regular and rotate (rather than irregular and tubular), but this isn’t always the case.

Key Features

Shrubs or vines with opposite leaves; ovaries inferior and rimmed with a tiny calyx that may enlarge considerable after the corolla is shed; corollas are zygomorphic and often bear a gibbous pouch near their base. Stamens are epipetalous.  Flowers can be in clusters, but are often borne if pairs.  The stems often have a wide pith.
